Archaeological Technician – Alberta

Western Heritage is looking for field technicians to work out of our St. Albert office to help us finish our busy 2023 field season. The position will start immediately and last until the end of field season, likely the end of November or mid-December, if conditions allow.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Shovel testing of high potential localities, pedestrian survey, excavation of archaeological sites, comprehensive note taking, artifact recovery, and photography.
  • Fieldwork preparations: constructing screens, organizing and maintaining safety and field equipment.
  • Driving a loaded 1-ton truck in variable weather and road conditions (where applicable).
  • Operating ATV (quads) to access field sites (where applicable).
  • Archaeological fieldwork (survey, shovel testing) in remote and forested locations.
  • Navigating through remote and challenging terrain using GPS and maps.

  • The ability to conduct physical labour outside for long hours, in challenging environments and variable weather conditions.
  • Field TechnicianThe ability to work shifts away from home for up to 10 days, often in remote locations.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

  • A professional, responsible and respectful manner.
  • A high regard for personal and group safety.
  • A high level of self-motivation.

Successful applicants will need to have their own CSA-approved footwear with ankle support, rain/snow gear, and high-visibility cruiser vest; a valid Class 5 Drivers’ License and Standard First Aid and ATV safety certification is an asset but not a must.
