Archaeological Technician – Alberta

Western Heritage is looking for archaeological field technicians to join our St Albert team for the upcoming 2023 field season. Fieldwork is due to start at the beginning of June and will likely continue through to November.

What you’ll be doing
Archaeological fieldwork under the supervision and mentorship of an experienced lead/permit holder.

  • Shovel testing of high potential localities, pedestrian survey, excavation of archaeological sites, comprehensive note taking, artifact recovery, and photography.
  • Assist in relocating forestry harvest block boundaries and road routes.

Fieldwork Preparation

  • Constructing screens, fixing damaged equipment, prepping gear for the upcoming field shifts, organizing and maintaining safety equipment.

Fieldwork Access

  • Drive a 1-ton truck in variable weather and road conditions.
  • Use an ATV in variable weather and ground conditions to access field sites.
  • Navigate through remote and challenging terrain using GPS and maps.

What are we looking for in you?

  • Have a valid Class 5 drivers licence with an up-to-date and clean driver’s abstract.
  • The ability to conduct physical labour outside for long hours, in often challenging environments and weather conditions.
  • To be able to work shifts away from home for up to 10 days, often in remote locations.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving abilities .
  • Good verbal and written communication skills .
  • A professional, responsible and respectful manner.
  • A high regard for personal and group safety.
  • A high level of self motivation.
