The New Western Heritage
Western Heritage is changing.

Western Heritage Services Inc., Alberta Western Heritage, are now Western Heritage.  In addition, we are increasing our work in archaeological prospection and Quaternary Consultants is now, Western Heritage.  Finally, we are adding our world class remote specialists at Digital Environmental.  The new Western Heritage offers services in Archaeology, Prospection (Ground Penetrating Radar and Magnetic Surveys), and Geomatics (focused on object oriented classifications and SAR applications).

Such exciting changes demand an exciting new website, and its coming.  In the mean time, please bear with this one.  For information on our new Geomatics Department, please see www.digitalenvironmental.ca.

Western Staff Attend Geophysics Course
Terry Gibson, from the St. Albert office, and Michelle Manchur, from the Saskatoon office, recently attended the National Parks Service Geophysics Course, held this year in Fargo, North Dakota. Previously, Peggy Mckeand, from the Saskatoon office, had attended the course. This course provides first hand training and experience in using the trinity of archaeological geophysics techniques: gradiometry, ground penetrating radar, and resistivity.

Staff Attend Geophysics Workshop
Terry Gibson from Alberta Western Heritage™, and Jim Finnigan and Peggy McKeand of Western Heritage Services attended a three day workshop on archaeological geophysics hosted by the Saskatchewan Association of Professional Archaeologists. The workshop instructor was Dr. Ken Kvamme, Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies at the University of Arkansas. Workshop participants were able to apply magnetometry, resistivity, conductivity and ground penetrating radar to an historic homestead.

Western Heritage has recently purchased an FM-256 fluxgate magnetometer and is currently offering archaeological geophysics as a commercial service.

Saskatoon Office Moves
The Saskatoon office has moved to a new location on Duchess Street.  The new location is owned by the company.  In designing the buiding, every effort was made to reduce our carbon footprint.  Many building materials were recycled, solar lighting was used in the hallways, and the buiding is insulated to reduce heating and cooling costs.  The new address is:

322 Duchess Street
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
S7K 0R1

All phone numbers stay the same.

Western Acquires Gradiometer
Frustrated by difficulties in trying to rent archaeological magnetometers, Western Heritage has purchased a FM 256 Fluxgate Gradiometer developed by GeoScan Research of Great Britain. This instrument was developed specifically for archaeological surveys and it can record up to 16 readings per metre, although surveys are currently done at a sampling rate of 8 readings per metre. Properly tuned, the instrument is accurate to plus or minus 0.1 nT. Looking worldwide, geophysics is a critical component for designing cost effective archaeological investigations. Western Heritage has used archaeological geophysics in many of its projects to date and the company is investing in research and development to take a leadership position in the applications of these technologies in Canada.
